The Sunshine Services team recently completed a project that combined both function and curb appeal. We began by drilling and setting aluminum posts in concrete to create a solid foundation for a 66-foot span of Mondaria Composite Fence (Brown) . Once cured, the posts were anchored, and the fence was finished with top trim and caps for a polished look.

To tie this Fence and Landscape project in Onalaska together, we installed gray bullet edgers along both the existing white fence and the new composite fence, ensuring a cohesive design for future landscaping. We then added Typar weed fabric for long-term weed control, planted new greenery—including arborvitae —and enhanced the beds with a mix of mulch, cobblestone, and river rock .

The result is a durable fence and beautifully refreshed landscape that offers privacy, structure, and year-round style.

Everyone has a different plan and that is what we enjoy about landscaping and building retaining walls in the West Salem area. Let’s get started and share with you how we begin to tackle a retaining wall in West Salem. Before we could begin any excavation work on the hillside in West Salem, we needed to demo and remove the existing yard shed and concrete pad. Clearing this space was essential to give us a clean slate for a properly constructed retaining wall and improved parking surface.

Once the shed was cleared out and hauled away, our crew got to work excavating the hillside below the driveway. The goal was to raise the lower gravel pad to be level with the driveway using breaker rock and base gravel. This not only improves functionality but also creates a smooth transition for easier parking.

With the gravel pad compacted to the required height, we then prepped the area for the retaining wall. This involved carefully digging and leveling the base about 4 feet from the edge of the asphalt driveway. That extra space allows room to properly compact the material and install geogrid, a crucial step for structural stability.

The base layer of County Materials block was laid and leveled across the entire 54-foot span. From there, we began assembling the wall, adding rows of retaining wall block and securing geogrid every other layer to reinforce the structure and tie it back into the hillside. This method ensures long-lasting strength and durability.

After reaching the desired wall height, we finished it off with a clean top cap for a polished, professional look. The result is a functional and attractive retaining wall that not only stabilizes the slope but enhances the property's usability and curb appeal.

Our goal is to truly understand our customer and listen to their goals of their property so we can make sure the result is what they are looking for! Our homeowner in West Salem wanted a cleaner, more modern look with easy-to-maintain materials, and we were happy to deliver.

We began by removing all of the existing river rock and weed fabric from the front half of the house, extending around both corners to the fence line. The rock bed on the right side of the garage was overgrown, so we cleared out old plants and replaced them with low-maintenance options to enhance curb appeal while keeping upkeep to a minimum.

Next, we turned our attention to the front landscape bed, removing dead and undesirable plants to make room for a cleaner look. On the left side of the home, we removed more rock and fabric, then filled in low areas around the egress window to ensure proper drainage and a level surface.

With the old materials cleared, we dug a fresh trench around the beds and installed sleek bullet edgers to define the new landscape border. We then added new weed fabric throughout the beds, carefully working around existing plants to preserve what the homeowner wanted to keep. We repeated this process around the front yard tree for a consistent appearance.

To finish, we installed brand-new river rock over the weed barrier, giving the entire front yard a fresh, updated look. The result? A well-defined, low-maintenance landscape that adds beauty and structure to the property.

Our client, Dan in Onalaska, wanted to update his front landscape bed by removing two large, overgrown shrubs that were blocking the view of his home. We carefully removed the shrubs to create a more open and inviting front yard .

To enhance the look and define the space, we trenched around the landscape bed and his existing birch tree, then installed red bullet edgers for a clean, structured appearance. Two weigela shrubs were transplanted into the bed to provide vibrant seasonal color, and we finished off the space with red mulch in both the tree ring and the landscape bed. The final result is a front yard that feels fresh, clean, and welcoming.

Backyard Transformation & Fire Pit Prep

In the backyard, Dan had a pond area that no longer suited his lifestyle. We removed the existing boulders and filled the space with soil and decomposed granite , creating a level and attractive foundation for a future fire pit area . This transformation gives the backyard a whole new purpose—perfect for relaxing evenings and social gatherings.

Above the new fire pit zone, we’ll be rebuilding the flagstone walkway for easier access and visual appeal. We also constructed a small retaining wall to prevent soil erosion on the slope, which will protect the newly renovated area for years to come.

Tree Removal & Hillside Cleanup

Another key part of this project was the removal of a large walnut tree in the backyard. Our team cut it down to ground level, opening up the yard and allowing more light to reach the fire pit area and surrounding landscape.

On the hillside, we tackled overgrowth by clearing out weeds and invasive trees , dramatically improving the visual appeal of the space and creating a cleaner, more manageable slope.

Location – West Salem, WI

Project details:

Bill sought to refresh the appearance of his home while increasing seating space for gatherings on the front patio. To achieve this we removed the existing plants and landscaping from the front yard and installed a new paver patio with matching steps leading to the front door. We also added natural mulch around the patio area. Along the side of the house, we trenched and created a rock bed, complemented by bullet edgers for a clean, defined look. In the backyard, we removed an overgrown landscaping bed and replaced it with a new set of paver patio steps, complete with a landing at the base of the steps for added functionality and aesthetic appeal.
