Transforming Outdoor Spaces in Onalaska, WI: Front Yard Refresh & Backyard Fire Pit Prep

Front Yard Landscape Makeover
Our client, Dan in Onalaska, wanted to update his front landscape bed by removing two large, overgrown shrubs that were blocking the view of his home. We carefully removed the shrubs to create a more open and inviting front yard.
To enhance the look and define the space, we trenched around the landscape bed and his existing birch tree, then installed red bullet edgers for a clean, structured appearance. Two weigela shrubs were transplanted into the bed to provide vibrant seasonal color, and we finished off the space with red mulch in both the tree ring and the landscape bed. The final result is a front yard that feels fresh, clean, and welcoming.
Backyard Transformation & Fire Pit Prep
In the backyard, Dan had a pond area that no longer suited his lifestyle. We removed the existing boulders and filled the space with soil and decomposed granite, creating a level and attractive foundation for a future fire pit area. This transformation gives the backyard a whole new purpose—perfect for relaxing evenings and social gatherings.
Above the new fire pit zone, we’ll be rebuilding the flagstone walkway for easier access and visual appeal. We also constructed a small retaining wall to prevent soil erosion on the slope, which will protect the newly renovated area for years to come.
Tree Removal & Hillside Cleanup
Another key part of this project was the removal of a large walnut tree in the backyard. Our team cut it down to ground level, opening up the yard and allowing more light to reach the fire pit area and surrounding landscape.
On the hillside, we tackled overgrowth by clearing out weeds and invasive trees, dramatically improving the visual appeal of the space and creating a cleaner, more manageable slope.
